metal detectors! and school!

my school just got some new metal detectors because the old ones were faulty lol

What are your thoughts on this subject?

I think it depends on a lot of things, like where the school is and whether it's in a high crime area. In my school for example, we don't need metal detectors (at least I hope we don't) but we have drug sniffing dogs that go around an sniff the lockers every once in a while. Drugs are a way bigger problem where I live than guns.

I don't understand why a school would want to have metal detectors, I would just see it as a big waste of taxpayer's money... but I haven't been everywhere in the world, so I picked "I don't know"...

If it decreases the chance of somebody getting a gun or other destructive device into school, I'm all for it. I guess it could depend on which area you live in, but you can't put a price on safety.

I agree, safety is something you can't put a price on, but where I live, guns are very rare, the only people that have them in their homes are hunters and homeguardsmen, and even their weapons are tightly regulated.

I went to a small high school and we never had metal detectors. The high school across from us was really big but I never noticed any metal detectors. We did get put on lockdown a few times though from people calling in about gun threats and shootouts. I always thought that'd be the perfect way to divert the police force to go and do something else...

But anyway, I'll agree that it really depends on the area and circumstances. If it has the chance to save someone's life, then I'd say it's worth it. (As long as they actually could help out and aren't rendered useless or faulty.)

BTW: Do you feel safer with them there, or not?

You can. Safety has a very high price- the loss of freedom. It's up to the individual to decide if it's worth it. Everything that makes us safer is a trade.

Not necessarily, if you change the socio-economic climate things can be safer without the loss of freedom. In the States, it's poor, inner-city schools that need metal detectors, but if the surrounding community had a more money things would be different. A lot of people take up crime because they need the money. If some illegal narcotics (marijuana and other soft drugs) were legalized then they would lose the monetary value, undercutting many criminals who would then need to look for a different job.

As well as the novelty and "oooh, this is illegal" mentality. Or because of it. (Losing monetary value because it's lost the whole novelty feeling.)

That's true... I didn't think of economic change as a way of improving safety.

i disagree they are not a necesity. plus they most likely wont do a thing. not all guns or weapons are metal. plus plastic can be made into any weapon. if someone really wants to take someone else out they will. a metal detector wont stop it. it does nothing but provide a safe sence of security.

i think metal detectors are good at school because what if you piss sombody off,those metal detectors just might save your life,or sombody elses

Metal detectors are ineffective anyways. What we really need is pointed stick detectors.

Hm that's interesting.
I live & study in Singapore where metal detectors in schools are unheard of. I would find it a huge infringement on my privacy, if they were used. Guns are regulated strictly, I think hardly anyone besides policemen have them here. Our country's too small to have animals worth hunting either.
This is a bit off topic, but the closest I've experienced to metal detection were temperature checks in case one of us got SARS. They did have temperature detectors at our airport and customs checkpoints too though.

Well before you get metal detectors, I'd say it's time to get a police force that can prevent crime without the help of gun-owning citizens (that is what the police force is supposed to do, right?)... Get more policemen, and control them so they stay fit, and good with their firearms. I think that that makes more sense than letting (almost) every man own a gun. Only the military and police should have them, so they won't have to worry as much about the criminal shooting back.

That may work well for cities, but for rurual areas there are few police and the time it takes to answer a call could be an hour. So people need an effective means of defense because there are times locked doors don't handle it. I had a great aunt who needed a shotgun to protect herself from the creepy nieghbor who probably intended to rape her.

Also, hunting is a large part of American culture. A lot of my realtives hunt or have, like my grandmother. (She hunted deer, come deer season if she saw a buck in her corn field, it was food for the table.)

Also, I really doubt if banning guns will stop criminals from owning guns. The would just need to steal more and sell more drugs to get guns.
