Banning the use of Landmines A resolution to slash worldwide military spending.
Category: Global Disarmament Strength: Strong Proposed by: Abrizza Description: All nations are advised that landmines are cruel and unnecessary devices to civilian populations of nations around the world. These weapons indiscriminately maim and kill civilian targets. When conflicts end, landmines pose a serious threat to farming and render large portions of land unuseable. The expense and difficulty of removing landmines after hostilities cease means that farmland and other areas might never be useful to populations for any enterprise. For this reason the immediate banning of the use of landmines in conflicts carried out by UN counties is called for.
I deeply apologize for my short leave this week. I fully intende on voting on the landmine proposal. I would like to know everyone's opinions so feel free to comment. I personally think the propsal is harmless to a nation's economy unless your top defense contractor specializes in landmines. I personally do know have any in my nation's defense arsenal. Respectfully, Himes
We had been using old Socialist anti-tank mines. Especially on Kolgujev, they're still prevelent. I would like to see this resolution passed. Maybe we can get some help removing them.
We see landmines as essentially defensive weapons deployable by smaller states at less expense. We are talking about war, which means humaneness is unfortunately highly marginal in the situation to start with and enforceability is what the whole fight is about. We would rather see the UN do more realistic and helpful things, perhaps like helping clean up after wars.

I agree with both of you two. But wouldn't it be better if the UN banned landmines as well as helping clean up after wars, after all this does mean less clearing up in the future doesn't it?.

One other thing to think about is that not every nation is in the UN. What if a non UN nation went to war with a UN nation? The non UN nation would have an advantage because they would have land mines while the UN nation would not.
The UN should stay out of our business. I voted no.
Of course we should have land-mines! Since arms-manufacturing is one of Alfonias three greatest industries, i voted NO! We need the cash, and no mines will be placed on our soil anyway. I urge everyone to vote no, since this is good for the economy of the 10000 Islands!
