UN Proposal: End Barbaric Punishments

Well I took the initiative and decided to start the thread.


Description: It has come to the attention of many nations that there is no torture in the UN. My proposal is a simple one: To outlaw and prevent torturing of witnesses to receive information.

Every nation has the right to interrogate witnesses. However, they do not have the right to break bones, blind and bruise people while in questioning. (The same goes for punishments for a crime. The punishments have to fit the crime and not include torture or cruel and unusual punishment.)

Any information proved to be found by methods of torture will not be heard in a court of law and the nations will be punished with a substantial fine.

I hope that everyone realizes how barbaric torture and cruel and unusual punishment really is and will support the views of the many concerned nations.


Personally, I'm not sure what our opinion is. Being nice and all is great, but sometimes you need to break a leg or gouge out an eye. What is everyone else gonna vot on?

Needs more definition. Would it mean that you could not make prisoners listen to 12 hours of Michael Jackson videos without bringing down the wrath of the UN? (Or Mozart if you're not into it.) Personally we in Fleeb get the best results with our long fingernails and a particularly rough old blackboard left over from when the National Chairman of the Board was in 2nd grade. Opens 'em up every time!

Normally I would have voted with this resolution, however shortly after starting to playNationstates one of the radio stations in Jamzland was overtaken by terrorists. The terrorists made fake newsflashes and sent the whole of Jamzland into dissarray when they were told that the Imperial Palace (J-town) had been bombed killing my family however this was not true. Only one terrorist was captured by the Imperial Police and if torture was not allowed he would never have told us the whereabouts of his fellow terrorists, who were subsequently apprehended by the Imperial Guard (secret police) thanks to his information under torture. This proposal is far too heavy handed to work. If we were only allowed to use torture under certain circumstances then that would be acceptable but to ban it altogether is utterly stupid, it greatly limits our powers over our nations.

Well, ya convinced me. Actually i was already planning on voting against it. I mean, my 2 headed 7 ft. tall mutant needs SOMETHING to do on the weekends!

Nulibert already has a law against barbaric punishment on the books. No longer do we allow public hangings or firing squads, as in the days of Socialist rule. We're more civilized than that. Please vote yes on this resolution, and stop the cruelty.

Prevention is the best cure. Even if you won't use torture keep it legal and it will deter criminals.

Using torture or not is a matter that every nation has to decide themselves, i think it should be allowed, though i don't like torture,. A civilized nation like Alfonia of course gives the prisoners a variety of drugs, that make them tell the truth. If they still don't, they are regarded as not useful, and are most often shot or beheaded.

NO,NO,NO! this cannot be allowed to persist, cruel physical punishments need to be outlawed. physical torture also. i wouldnt like someone to pull my fingernails out with pliers while stabbing me in the side with a hot iron and i dont think any of you would either.

This resolution is a blatant violation of the sovereignty of our nations. Our nations must be free to decide what methods we employ in the interrogation/apprehension of criminals. It's also implying the superiority of the values of a certain section of the world's population over the rest, and dare I say it, is a throwback to the days of colonialism where by means of better weaponry and the might of industry, a few nations subjugated and enslaved the rest of the world. Cultural imperialism like this is merely another form of it.
For the sake of sovereignty and independence, I am firmly against this measure, and should it be implemented, it will have ABSOLUTELY no bearing on Türkmenian policies.
