You guessed it. I'm one of the flies in the ointment. First be aware that I've lived with prostitutes who are independent of a pimp and know what their life is like and WHY they do what they do. For many it's a way to reclaim control of their bodies and also make money where no other jobs are open and other avenues have failed.

In ancient societies where the institution was legal (and it truly is among the world's oldest professions), there was typically very stringent requirements. With modern medical technology to add to the mix, this could become a very safe environment for men or women who wished such a lifestyle. This also neatly regulates the health issues, provides tax revenue, and keeps it out of the hands of the seedy underworld. Additionally they would HAVE to keep records (humm... now there's a good balance point for those with ethical issues).

Now why would anyone consider such a life is a very personal choice, but nonetheless it's a choice of how one uses his or her body. Under a legal eye, it would be far more controlled and far less a hazard to society at large

I've seen many points that make good points to how it should be legalised. However, I will not revoke my statement because it 1) is strongly a violation of many nations morals and 2) is YET AGAIN a HUGE violation of national soverignty. That is what this proposal would do. Pace, Loresong, the way it works for the vast (95%+) majority of women (and men) caught in the "sexual services industry" is that they are kept in this form of degradation by a combination of addiction, violence and fear.

I support this motion. It would legalize the sex industry and take away the dangers faced by men and women who practice this craft.

It is nice to label this as imoral or moral, but morality or immorality has nothing to do with the un resolution.

The women and men who chose to do this will do it whether it is legal or illegal. It is far better to have it regulated and have places where the trade can be practiced in safety, than having people roaming the streets and practicing unsafe sex.

Abuse remains illegal. Slavery remains illegal.

Therefore anyone "caught" by someone in the "sex trade" is already the victim of some other crime. The addiction is their problem, perhaps, but the violence and fear are real crimes with real victims, and the police should be used to protect the victims in this case, not lock them away too.

Again, while justice and freedom are very important to legislation, "decency" and "morality" have no place in it. Or should not, at any rate. Those are personal decisions about personal relationships, and the government's job is not to play big brother.

This is my position as well.

I am for legalised prostitution for a number of reasons.

1/ By regulating this industry the criminal element is removed, which in turn safe guards the people that work in this industry.

2/ Research shows that a regulated sex industry lower incidents of STDs

3/ There is a reason that prostition is called 'the worlds oldest profession'. Prositition is an intergral part of our society that fulfills a vital role for many men and women. In mining towns if the miners do not get sex research has shown that violence rises dramatically. Many people that do not have partners have the option of using a prostitutes services so that a number ofbasic animal drives are satisfied.

4/ Sex is a natural thing and should not be pushed to the fringes of our society where people can be prayed upon.

5/ Currently to be owned by a pimp is in effect slavery. To take away the pimp is to release a person form slavery.


As for the thing about sovereignty being violated by the UN just do what my country, Australia, does and ignore it.

That's a problem, too...

There *is* no reputable source of research. Which means that neither side of this debate can be conclusively proven right or wrong without "trying it".

Therefore, all arguments are based on speculation and/or emotions.

I maintain that the current state of affairs (in most of the Occident) is not working well, and that therefore trying something to improve it would be in order. Legalization enables the actual prostitutes to acquire police protection; while nothing is guaranteed, all the arguments I've seen so far vis-a-vis "slavery", "forced", "smuggling", and so on seem to make the assumption that "legalizing prostitution" means making the whole corrupt and disgusting industry in its current state legal.

I only support making trading sex for money legal. Everything else, slavery through forced addiction, is already another crime - crimes that in the current state of affairs, the victims have no legal recourse against.

What issue does the UN pass that does not infringe on National sovereignty?

I disagree with quite a few motions the UN has passed but our nation has followed the letter of the law and implemented them all.

The UN in nation states is there to pass or deny proposals by member voting. The delegates have voted to let the members have their say on this proposal. As with any other proposal it will either fail or pass and will be implemented in all nations if it passes.

If you disagree with the UN infringing on your national sovereignty why are you a member nation. If you wish to remain an isolationist withdraw from the UN. If you wish to stay in the UN you take the good with the bad. Sometimes there will be motions passed you disagree with.

There are extents, Fleeb, that the United Nations is permitted to intervene in national sovereignty. This exceeds said rights. One is permitted to argue that this is not what the UN should be because one has an opinion. If the belief of our delegate is that this is not included under what should be under UN control, that is his belief.

It happens to also be the belief of the Grand Vizier of Ezeqeel that the legalization of prostitution is not the United Nation's damned business. We are currently revamping our own police force so that we don't need to legalize this practice in order to render the city streets safer or protect our women's rights.

The UN currently runs under the assumption that it can dictate the morals of a nation while at the same time declaring itself religiously tolerant. If they feel like speaking out of both sides of their mouths, then they are welcome to, but they are lying dogs nonetheless.

The Holy Empire of Kokablel stands firmly against this resolution on the grounds that it impedes excessively on our sovereign rights as a nation and argues stringintly within the UN regarding this issue. If it benefits the liberal nations of the world to do this, so much the better for their decadence to be public, but we need not obey their rules. That is infringement.
