Puerto Rico was, before 1898, a Spanish colony, and thrice, a Spanish province, with delegation at the Spanish Parliament (Cortes). It even attained Autonomy, ironically, a week before the invasion of the United States.
Since 1898, Puerto Rico has been a United States colony. The USA tried to change the culture at several times before the 1950s, specially, changing the Spanish language (describing it as a 'patois') to English, and failing each time.
Puerto Rico is a 4 million inhabitated archipielago with a 98-99% Spanish speaking population who are US and PR citizens. The USA has recently (via the President's Taskforce) acknowledge that it lied to the United Nations saying that the 1952 Constitution had made PR autonomous, and therefore, it should be taken out of the decolonisation list.
As of 2007, the question still arises, creating passions at Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican colonies [populations] at New York, New Jersey, Orlando, and Chicago.
What should be done with one of the richest nations of Latin America, territory of the US?
