SOCIALISTS GAIN OVERALL MAJORITY... PP SUFFER SETBACK... WORST LIBERAL PERFORMANCE IN LIVING MEMORY... HUNTER FORMING NEW CABINET... PRESIDENCY GOES TO SECOND ROUND...
In a sensational election result, Stefan Hunter has been re-elected as Prime Minister of Serconea and forms a majority government.
Exit polls and early results showed that the Socialist Party won 57.1% of the ballots cast, more than enough for an overall majority.
The People's Party won 28.5% of the popular vote, a minor fall in their vote share from 2001
The Liberals had a spectacular failure, falling from 15.5% in 2001, to only 3.7% this time. In six out of ten districts, they failed to get the votes required to gain a seat. A series of scandals involving Liberals in the last Assembly may have led to a public backlash, or dislike of their constant powerbrokering.
The Greens largely stayed still, with a 5% vote share, but won seats in all 5 regions.
It was a good night for the Democratic Union, which gained 5 seats, but minor parties lost a total of 5 seats
Harupdar (Districts Seven, Eight and Nine) produced spectacular results for the Socialists, who won 106 out of 120 seats.
Serconije Mesto (District One) remained a PP stronghold, producing 32 out of their 114 AMs.
The new National Assembly (estimated):
Socialists 239
People's Party 114
Liberals 10
Greens 19
Others 18
Socialist overall majority of 78 (including Speaker)
The final results will be formally announced on Thursday.
----
In a surprise result, the Presidency goes to a second round after no candidate won an overall majority.
Lucas and McGee will compete in a run-off as the other eliminated candidates raced to endorse one of them
Peter Avon, the third place candidate, is expected to endorse Lucas today.
The second round will be held next weekend.
Exit poll results:
Andreja Lucas 49%
Mad Mikhail McGee 43%
Peter Avon 6%
Others 2%
