A purported fantasy novel about a man who was murdered and the search for the reason for it - initially led by the victim. Other than that, it's really hard to describe this fantastic work without revealing too much. Purported? Read it and find out.
It helps to have familiarity with the Chartist movement and/or 18th & 19th century philosophers, but you can do without.
IMO, Steven Brust's best novel. Emma Bull's Territory ranks slightly higher, depending on day of week.
Read it and let me know what you think...I'll wait...

I've only read Steven Brust' Vlad Taltos books, which I rather liked (waiting for Iorich to come in paperback before buying it). I've heard good things about Emma Bull, especially Territory, but haven't read anything by her yet. Maybe I should buy Freedom and Necessity. Hmm...

I saw one review that said those who prefer The Phoenix Guards to the Vlad books are more likely to like Freedom and Necessity.
