The following is a history of New Augustgrad. It was compiled from what remains of the historical accounts that have been lost during The Freedom War. An ongoing search to recover the pieces of New Augustgrad's history has been initiated and will be updated over time.
The Freedom War and The Fall of Augustgrad
Many, many years ago, Augustgrad was a large, prosperous nation - too large according to speculation of some of its scholars. The government and its citizens' had aspirations of being known as a benchmark nation throughout the region, and so Augustgrad adopted a, then revolutionary, new form of government known as a Democracy. In its model, representatives were elected to mirror the voice of the people they represented. For the next century or so this model proved to be a success, and the nation grew substantially. To account for this unprecedented growth, the nation began to expand. However, the more Augustgrad expanded the more its people divided in two: The Isolationists and The Expansionists. Friction between the divided people of Augustgrad began to swell, and the nation plunged into a decade-long civil war. When the war ended, Augustgrad recovered and reunited, but left a rather bad taste in the mouths of its citizens.
Augustgrad's benchmark aspirations were fulfilled with its model of the Representative Democracy as other nations began to adapt Augustgrad's model into their own governments. Augustgrad set out to fulfill new benchmark aspirations by adopting social progressivism. Over the next century Augustgrad introduced new legislature that protected its citizens' civil liberties and social freedoms one law at a time. However, doing so inadvertantly gave the government more and more power. As the dawn of a new century arrived, the government began to abuse its power. No longer did elected officials represent their citizenry; instead their primary concern was protecting their wealth of power at all costs. Thus, the once Democratic Nation of Augustgrad became a nation ruled by fascism. Overtime the citizenry grew more and more outraged by their government's abuse of power and so grew the number of non-violent protests. As these protests grew in frequency, so did the government's response of police-enforced riot control. In some incidents, protesters were killed as a result. Eventually the vast majority of citizens grew outraged at the new fascist government. The division that once plagued the lands of Augustgrad had returned.
As the friction between the government and its citizenry swelled, the government feared being violently overthrown by its citizens, and so it mobilized its entire military force in preparation. The citizens held fast to their belief in non-violent protest, at least long enough to give the government the benefit of the doubt one last time. In a stunning event the entire citizenry of Augustgrad amassed in the nation's capital Augustgrad City and its surrounding lands for one enormous protest. The fascist government, seeing the non-violent protest as an opportunity to cripple its enemy of revolting citizens, imposed martial law on the city and warned the citizens to evacute in one week, or else face the government resitence. The citizens remained. At the close of the week, the Military Force of Augustgrad, under direct orders, proceeded to execute all of the citizens within the city limits. Afterwards, the government officially declared all citizens of Augustgrad to be "enemies of the state." This has since come to be remembered as the Augustgrad Massacre. In all, 7 million were excuted. Once again the nation of Augustgrad plunged into civil war.
The horrific war between the fascist government of Augustgrad and its liberty-minded citizens, now known as The Freedom War, raged on for 25 grueling years. In the end the government was not overthrown by the citizens, as it had feared...it was completely destroyed. The citizens' guerilla tactics, as well as their zeal, proved advantageous against the Military Force of Augustgrad, but their lack of technology in weaponry proved crippling. A nation once comprised of a citizenry numbering in the hundreds of millions was reduced to simply one million survivors.
Though few, the veterans of The Freedom War remained optimistic about restoring Augustgrad to its better days.
And so began the age of New Augustgrad, and the dawn of a new beginning...
