This is just something that has been bugging me for a while, but before I put my feelings out there, I'll pose the question.
Should the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero in Manhattan be built there?
Personally, I'm all for it. It's their constitutional right as Americans, and furthermore, if we stop them from building the center, the terrorists who attacked civilians in our own territory win.
On September 11th, the goal of al Qaeda was to destroy and disrupt the very values of freedom and equality that the United States is based on. If Americans turn on other Americans out of fear, then the extremists who hijacked Islam on that day will have won.

It's an emotional issue and you asked the right question - should there be a mosque. Should is the keyword. Yes, mosques can be built anywhere, but should they? The answer is categorically no. Unfortunately, too many people forget what really happened on 9/11. It has lost meaning to many Americans and those around the world.
Now as a New Yorker and as someone who knows family members of those who died, I have yet to speak to any that support the construction of the mosque and considering what happened to their families, I think they deserve to be heard a hell of a lot more than anyone else who were not directly affected by the horrific attacks on our great nation. Some 9/11 families have come out in support of the mosque to be certain, but there are more against than for it.
And with each passing day, more and more things are coming out about radical views held by the mosque's supporters as well as the tax issues with their other properties. It's ridiculous and ill-conceived.

I agree with all Nixon said except for the last paragraph. If the idea is to reach out and become a building/mosque/community center/what have you for peace and understanding, and those you're trying to reach an understanding with are not receptive, then there's no point.
I take it, Nixon, you are referring to mention of a national security threat by the Imam? Well, it makes sense, but then again, radicals in the Middle East will jump on anything that seems unfavorable to them.
Edit: This should have been Mutanatia posting. My bad >.< This does reflect anyone else's views in the fantasy organization other than myself.

Well to be certain, Mut, the problem also arises from the fact that there are too many mosques in this country who do not cooperate with law enforcement. Couple that sentiment with the shady dealings of this imam and his supporters and there's is reasonable doubt to be wholeheartedly against this disgraceful project. If a more moderate imam who doesn't associate themselves with shady characters came forward and said they were going to spearhead the project, I'd have no problem with it. Now the families might still object, but from my view, I'd have no problem with it being built.

Building a mosque close to ground zero would prove that America's once high held value of liberty was still lived through the population of the US. I believe it would be good to show the world that the US is still the beacon of freedom... Besides, not letting them build would be unconstitutional!
Now as a New Yorker and as someone who knows family members of those who died, I have yet to speak to any that support the construction of the mosque and considering what happened to their families, I think they deserve to be heard a hell of a lot more than anyone else who were not directly affected by the horrific attacks on our great nation.
Now that is ridiculous. Constitutional rights are not a matter of personal opinions or emotional distress. I can't go to the police and require that my neighbour has to be thrown out of his house because his father murdered my father and I can't stand to see his face when I go out. I may think that he should move away for reasons of decency but I should not be able to enforce it.
Liberty and Justice are meaningless if they don't serve to protect each other. Governments are meaningless if they find themselves in a situation to favor one over the other.

A lot of people don't realize that there has already been a mosque at ground zero... in the south tower. It's not a matter of Muslims attacking Christians, it was a matter of Middle Eastern radicals attacking western infidels.
The terrorists didn't discriminate, and neither should we.
