Let's get nerdy up ins - Kirk vs. Picard

The eternal struggle comes to the debate hall! This argument is the civil war of Star Trek fandom, pitting brother against brother, friend against friend, father against son!

So let's nerd it up. Do you prefer James Kirk, quick on his feet but prone to insane ploys? Or Jean-Luc Picard, a master tactician who tends to be less flexible?

For what it's worth, I would rather have Kirk in command of a ship, but have Picard running the fleet.

Oh....definitely Kirk. I happen to love his insane ideas. Picard is too sober for my tastes. He acts like Data half the time. Yep, Kirk, all the way.

Picard, easily. He's a master tactician and acts far more like what I'd except from an officer of his rank as far as attitude. Kirk is too much of a cowboy.

I have to go with Picard on this one as well. I like Kirk and he has his strengths. but he's rather one dimensional. Kirk's solution to most problems is to best it, usually physically, and if he can't do that then he cheats so he can. He certainly has an unorthodox style of leadership that has served him well, especially on the front lines, but that's where I would leave him. Cowboy is definitely the appropriate term and cowboy only works in so many instances.

Picard on the other hand is a renaissance man. He's a master tactician as Tak mentioned, but he is also an accomplished diplomat and archaeologist. He can play the flute and make a nice bottle of wine. Presumably, given his musical abilities, he also retains whatever other skills he learned while under the effect of the Kataan probe. I believe he also has a good understanding of astronomy. Furthermore, he has a tremendous eye for talent as he hand-picked most of his senior staff before taking command of the Enterprise-D. His only real failing is in regards to the Borg, but the disturbing effect his assimilation had on him is mitigated by the profound understanding it has afforded him.

Yay for Kirk! You know, if you want a real intense debate, you should do Star Trek vs. Star Wars. Although, in my experience, that debate usually ends up getting ugly when the nerds start slapping each other.
