Cultural Overview
The culture is "Western", consumer oriented; with the economy having both public ownership and private ownership of the means of production (Government represents about 32% of the gross domestic product of the economy). The focus on science and technology causes Boltorians to be often fascinated by new technology and new gadgets and often purchase new technology before their previous models have truly expired. Boltorians have more secular-rational values and are not particularly interested in religious beliefs, and generally have an apathetic view of most foreigners, believing the Boltorian Federation can be strong by the strength of its own economy, as long as peace can be maintained by the Government and Boltorian Armed Forces. Most Boltorians hold the Boltorian Armed Forces in high esteem and consider it a tragedy when a soldier’s life is lost. Overpopulation in Boltor's major cities is starting to become a problem and most consider this the biggest problem to date (it is the main contributing factor to unemployment, urban sprawl and increasing resource and energy demand driving cost of living up).
Boltorians value their many freedoms and rights, including the importance of liberty and equal rights, but a class system is emerging due to the growing gap in rich-poor personal wealth. Most "lower class" Boltorians (About 42% of population) work long hard hours to meet ends meet, and pay off debts. Boltorians of the "Middle Class"(About 36%) have secondary and tertiary education (due to the government providing most domestic students loans to attend university) and use debt to purchase a home, while "lower class" members of society have a secondary education, but not of the quality afforded to those who can afford better and must pay rent for their housing (credit ratings usually too low to purchase housing). Upper Class Boltorian's enjoy luxurious lifestyles, and the finest tuition money can buy, but are viewed with suspicion and disdain if they do not do contribute or invest back into Boltor, by improving their cities and services. Boltorians value the right to self-expression and creativity, making high arts a valued a skill and pursuit but not as lucrative as scientific endeavour and entrepreneurial pursuits.
The youth of Boltor is often described as rebellious, spoilt, rude, computer competent, and don't know how good their lives are, as they never had to endure the direct effects of war like the previous generations. Obesity is starting to become a problem, especially among the youth, but more prevalently in the lower and middle class - due to the wide range of the cheap fast food industry (Boltor's top health researchers blame the cheeseburger and other foods in high saturated fat). The growth of social media on the internet has erupted and spread through society and especially the the youth at an alarming rate. Most teenagers to middle aged adult Boltorians use their smart phones and computers to chat/text/update their social media accounts many times during the day.
