I'm planning on offering a new course within the next couple weeks, and am willing to teach either introduction philosophy or introduction economics. I would appreciate it if anyone interested in either class(or both) would leave comments indicating their preference. Below are details on both classes.
Philosophy- I would cover the basics of modern metaphysical thinking, starting with the presocratic philosophers, and then the work of Plato. The course would then move to the debate between rationalists and empiricists, and Kant's ideas on the matter would be discussed. The final part of the course will then trace the fallout of the rationalist/empiricist debate to the current debate between the Analytic and Continentalist schools of thought, with the works of Wittgeinstein, Russell, Nietzsche, and Heidegger and Foucault being considered.
Economics- This class would consist of introductions to micro and macroeconomics. I would begin by teaching the models of perfect competition and monopolistic competition, and how opportunity cost factors into economics. I would then explain how GDP is calculated, and how the money supply relates to GDP. Finally I would show how both schools of economic thought can cross over by explaining international trade models, in particular the Ricardian model.
Thanks Everyone I'll be The Best Minister of Immigration Possible

hmmmm. it's a shame you cannot do both! I am 50 years old now and I studied philosophy formally when I was an undergrad back in the early 80s ... but had to teach myself economics out of my sister in laws undergraduate textbooks ... Personally, I think philosophy and economics can inform each other in powerful ways. One thing to be aware of ... if you do decide to head into philosophy ... well ... not all philosophy is equally powerful (or interesting) though this a matter of taste .. and what I find powerful might not unlock your mind the same way ... For me ... metaethics was a revelation ... but I found Hume's theory of the mind sort of arduous ...

I would love to teach both, but I'm currently taking a full load in the last year of my undergrad, so I don't think I have the time to do both courses justice if I taught them concurrently. I would be interested in teaching the less popular subject next term however. And philosophy is certainly a very subjective field when it comes to interest. Personally I find Nietzsche the most interesting and enlightening, but my hope is to teach all of the basic schools of philosophical thought fairly so that everyone has access to all of the basic tools modern philosophy has at its disposal.
Hi Transcendental Islands Islands LOL. Economics is way more subjective then philosophy Give mke a hard-nosed syllogism any day over an educated guess about raising interest rates

I will close the voting Thursday night(as a general deadline). At that point I will begin drafting a more detailed syllabus and create a sign up thread.
