Chapter 1: Tessie Squad
-----
9th August 2022
TAS-11 Restricted Area, Ostertrocken (Eastern Drylands), Auileria
A flash lit up the hills, momentarily turning the dim early morning sky into full daylight. A second later, a loud <BANG> sent birds flying out of the sparse few trees in the area, followed by another few flashes and bangs. A plume of thick smoke was rising up from the horizon, well beyond the chain-link fence. It was one of those fences that didn't need the frequent "RESTRICTED: MILITARY ZONE" signs or the armed patrols to make it clear that no person should go further.
~~
3 miles away
"Burke!" A hatch cover was thrown open, upsetting a cloud of sand and dust. A man climbed out. He was mid 30s, practical haircut that didn't get too much love in its maintenance, khaki uniform with the tower-and-wrench insignia of the ADF Engineer Corps. Lewis Parker looked young to be wearing the patches of a Captain, only helped by the boyish grin on his face as he walked up the hillside.
"Burke! Corey! Did you see th... Holy shit!" He looked down into the small valley formed by two hills The area was a blackened crater, still emanating smoke and dust. Metal debris was scattered over a hundred meters away. "Holy shit!"
He ran along the hilltop to another manhole and pulled it open. "Stop cowering man. Come look."
He helped a man climb out. Lt. SPC Corey Burke looked at the wreckage of their project, trying not to inhale the smoke too much. "The oxidiser tank burst. I got a huge drop in pressure just before the whole thing blew." he ran a hand through his hair. "This'll set us back months."
Lewis put a hand on his shoulder. "Cheer up, Corey. We learned something today."
"What would that be?"
"Our oxidiser tank design sucks. Gather the troops. It's time for AAR."
"Yes sir." Burke saluted and walked off.
