Well friends, it's happened. What many thought was a long shot or a joke actually happened. For some, Donald Trump's election heralds the dawn of a great future for the United States. For others, when the shock subsided it was only fear that was left.
But what will happen? Why?
RESOLVED: Donald Trump's presidency will have a positive effect on the United States and its standing in the world.
Welcome back to the University Debates, everyone. I'm your host, W&S, and I thought the election results and implications would be a great place to renew a great university tradition! Basically it works like this: Sign up, pick a side, defend your side. You don't have to agree with the side you pick, but you have to be prepared to defend it in some way, shape, or form. I know I picked a contentious topic that some will have trouble divorcing their feelings from, myself included, but this is the place to look at a topic from every angle! That's the fun of debate.
I'm changing up the format from debates past to make it a little more open and Q&A based:
The affirmative team will post its opening argument of no more than 300 words. The negative team will then post its opening argument of up to 300 words, stating its position and responding to the affirmative team. Then there will be a cross-examination period of two days where each side will get to ask questions of each other. As long as the questions are relevant I ask that each side answer every question asked by the other side.
Following the cross-examination period there will be a series of four rebuttals, of no more than 200 words. The negative team gets the first rebuttal, then the affirmative, then negative, then affirmative. Following the conclusion there will be placed in the debate thread a poll of the community to determine the winner. The poll will remain open for three days after the final speech is given and the team with the most votes is the winner. The winning team receives 10000 Tacos each.
Obvious ground rules and success tips that I'm going to state anyway:
No personal/ad hominem attacks. You're attacking an argument, not the person who made it.
Please make speeches relevant to the resolution. If it goes too far off topic I will ask you to rewrite or delete the irrelevant things.
Use evidence. Back up your claims, don't just state them and claim it's right. Telling us why you're right is way more persuasive and makes you look way more credible.
Please don't post in the debate thread if you're not giving a speech or aren't the moderator (me).
And with that, SIGNUPS ARE OPEN! Having 3-ish people per side would be great. We can increase or reduce the number of rebuttals to account for additional people though. Affirmative team is arguing for the resolution (see bold text above), negative team is arguing against the resolution.
