In the article above, it mentioned a few people taking the opportunity to buy some discounted bitcoin. Is that smart, or is it going to end poorly?

End poorly, I'd wait for the market to find a bottom first then see where it goes from there. Also Bitcoin is the dinosaur of cryptocurrencies and won't survive the battle for supremacy to determine the dominant cryptocurrency of the world (better algorithms will likely surpass it in the future).
