With the current health crisis (covid-19) ongoing is it important for our legislators to prioritize public health in the short term which may have drastic long lasting effects on our economy, or should they prioritize the economy which would have drastic/catastrophic short term effects to our public health? (if most recent timeline for a vaccine is accurate 6-12 months). And why?

I think the best way for the US to move forward would be a unilateral agreement for strict shelter in place for about 3-4 weeks. We've already seen what this patchwork kind of plan states and the federal government is doing to our public health situation and it is for sure a huge drag now on the economy the longer this crises continues. We need to be prepared and have this in control within the next couple of months or we will have a disaster on our hands as the flu season hits as well as this ongoing threat and hospitals then run the chance of becoming even more overwhelmed.

Then what? If you just lift shelter in place after 3-4 weeks, you’ll create this whole situation again. You’ll need a long term plan to live with this virus, such as mandatory masking

If proper limitations were in place to keep people in isolation , the people that are positive wouldnt spread it outside of the nuclear family. Once infected people then either remain isolated or move into a hospital environment. Seeing as the current time frame for incubation period is 2-14 days before symptoms show, and the average case is 1-2 weeks a 4 week period of lockdown would almost kill this virus in itself. Then on top of that yes masks for the next 2-3weeks after and it would more than likely dissapear. IT is an interesting dynamic though, because there are far too many variables for a perfect strategy like that to work although on paper it does. With the current political and social environment there will not be an abrupt end to this without any strict government guidelines with support from the federal government. It has become too much of a flash point opinion wise.
