I like phpBB the best... Its open source and extremely powerful if you now what you are doing... and have a little php knowledge...
But you would need to get you own webspace with php ability!
And it is highly adaptable to your needs... That's by the way what the official NS forum used to be. About Probards: I haven't used it but I have heard that there are security issues with it... I don't know exactely what kind though.
About Invisionfree: I get really annoyed by their way of communication: my firewall always wants to create a couple of connections I actually blocked... I don't know where they are from or where they go to, but I don't want any more connections than those required to read a forum! Maybe someone could tell me what the connections are for??!
So I guess the easiest way to get a forum is to sign on to proboards, but the best way is to get some php webspace and install phpBB...

You can get tons of layouts and skins for Invision and they make attractive forums. Proboards is really easy though, but very simple, too simple for me at times. And phpBB is very good too.
