A new up-and-coming leader in the Islands, Trog L. O'dyte, started a movement to help save energy and preserve the environment. The issue that really cemented her status as an economic maven was the idea that people should live underground. The temperature 10 feet/3.3 meters underground, extending for 50 meters/150 feet down below that, is a constant 55 degrees F/13 degrees C. It was a simple matter, said Ms. O'Dyte, to heat the homes, businesses, and eventually underground cities as the heat only needed to be raised to 23C/73F to be comfortable year round. As people dug into their Islands like ticks on a hound dog, they realized that they had essentially made fallout shelters and survival bunkers out of their homes. Z Day and whatever Max Barry calls the yearly atomic wars were no longer frightening. Gun and other armament sales plummeted as a result. People just didn't feel as strong a need for 'things that go boom'.
What does all this mean for the average Islander and their shop items? Well, Owning Weapons Factories, due to the sudden and dramatic drop in sales, resulted in a loss of 500 tacos per factory owned. However, Underground Cities, with all the savings coming from a much lower power usage, mitigated that 500 taco loss by 67%.
