Welcome to the October Poet Laureate Contest, with poems centered on bravery. Below are the poems I received. Anyone may vote in this contest, and the poem with the most votes earns its author the title of Poet Laureate! Remember, you still should NOT share the authorship of any entry with anyone but Wille-Harlia until the contest is over. Voting will be open until 12 A.M. GMT on October 18.
Please give the poets their due courtesy and read over all the poems before voting.
Good luck to everyone, and may the best poem win!
Entry #1
Battle of Dawn
With the coming of the dawn,
I stretch and release a yawn.
My bones are stiff with sleep,
for now our wives will weep.
I dawn my armor with grace,
For now I must brace,
the coming of light,
the terror of the fight.
With the speed of sound,
we march on hallowed ground.
To war I go,
through ice and snow.
The Empire calls for me,
I know where I must be,
on the march towards the battlefield,
for I know I must never yield.
The blood won't slow me down,
For I fight for the crown.
I never fight alone,
for the Emperor's might has grown.
With tanks, and planes,
we make new lanes,
for our nation,
we survive damnation.
After every glorious victory,
we stamp our names in history.
We march our way back to the Empire,
while our wives prepare the fire.
I step into my house,
and there I am met by my spouse,
I start to shed,
My armor that feels like lead.
I spend time with my family,
to where I say damningly,
the night has come,
for now I feel so glum.
I slip into bed,
and lay down my head.
As the sleep takes me,
I think of the sea.

Entry #2
Sinking Ships
Bear the storm, proud anchor
And bear it well, for you have earned it
You were warned not to go
But you were blinded to your folly
Ignorance, they called it
When you boarded that sinking ship
Foolishness, they shouted out
But your ears were deaf to their noise
Ride out the waves, dear captain
As they attempt to swallow you whole
Hold your ground, though it be hard
For your heart has guided you this far
Courage, that is your true name
You stood, defiant, as you stand now
On the deck of broken dreams
Drowned, as they reign, triumphant
Now, we stare at the black coffin
How did you say goodbye?
Did you cling to the mast in fear?
Or jump from the bird’s nest?
Here, we build our own damned vessels,
So welcome us with glee, cadaver,
As we cast off in search of peace
And raise storms to calm our restless souls
Bear the storm, proud anchor
And bear it well, for you have earned it
You were warned not to go
But you were blinded to your folly
Ignorance, they called it
When you boarded that sinking ship
Foolishness, they shouted out
But your ears were deaf to their noise

Entry #3
On the Darkest Day
The path ahead grows colder
No light in sight
Creatures running about
Shadows cutting deeper
Standing there, I wait
Looking ahead straight
Fear still on me
Though- something awakening
Despair falling to the ground
Hope, taking its place, crowned
My friends believing in me, all around
Although the path looks dark and vile
I step forth onto the orange pathway
None will distract me from my way
I go onwards, facing the forest, grey
For I will stand up and fight, on the darkest day
The path ahead grows colder
No light in sight
Creatures running about
Shadows cutting deeper
Standing there, I wait
Looking ahead straight
Fear still on me
Though- something awakening
Despair falling to the ground
Hope, taking its place, crowned
My friends believing in me, all around
Although the path looks dark and vile
I step forth onto the orange pathway
None will distract me from my way
I go onwards, facing the forest, grey
For I will stand up and fight, on the darkest day
Entry #4
Latter Day
In cold, amidst the storms of fear
I sat, debarked, with goals unclear
Snow and wind come soaring in to
Cast my goals outside therein
“You fool!” They said, not with gravel
They spoke of the risky travel,
Because to walk to the frontier
Was no task to do in latter year
“Don’t go!” They plead, with good intent,
And I don’t blame them either
But with no adventure, I’m not content
So I step into the cedars
In cold, amidst the storms of fear
I sat, debarked, with goals unclear
Snow and wind come soaring in to
Cast my goals outside therein
“You fool!” They said, not with gravel
They spoke of the risky travel,
Because to walk to the frontier
Was no task to do in latter year
“Don’t go!” They plead, with good intent,
And I don’t blame them either
But with no adventure, I’m not content
So I step into the cedars
Entry #5
Am I Brave?
Into a burning building, I
Have never had to run,
And face the fiery flames to save
A mother or her son.
No criminals, with gun or knife
In darkness have I sought,
To make the world a safer place
No murderers I’ve caught.
On front lines I have never stood
While those around me die,
With shells from far artillery
Exploding in the sky.
Yet call me not a coward, friend
Each day I face my foes,
A smile I wear upon my face
Disguising pain and woes.
Though in the end I may not win
I shan’t bemoan my plight,
With fading strength and head held high
I’ll not give up my fight.
Into a burning building, I
Have never had to run,
And face the fiery flames to save
A mother or her son.
No criminals, with gun or knife
In darkness have I sought,
To make the world a safer place
No murderers I’ve caught.
On front lines I have never stood
While those around me die,
With shells from far artillery
Exploding in the sky.
Yet call me not a coward, friend
Each day I face my foes,
A smile I wear upon my face
Disguising pain and woes.
Though in the end I may not win
I shan’t bemoan my plight,
With fading strength and head held high
I’ll not give up my fight.
