Senate Election Information
All nations interested in running for the office of Senator should be aware of the following legal requirements. If any nation is unsure of their eligibility to run for office, they should contact Markanite.
The following constitutional requirement affects nations who wish to run for the office of Senator.
Article 3.2. Senators shall be elected for a term of four months, two each to be elected on the second Tuesday of each odd month of the calendar year. Elections shall follow a course of one week for nomination and campaigning, after which nominations are closed and followed by one week for voting. Nomination, voting and election shall be open to all citizen nations of The 10000 Islands registered as reset time of the first day of nominations.
The following statutes and resolutions affect Senate elections.
All citizen nations seeking election to the Council of Nine, whether this is as World Assembly Delegate or as Senator, shall have registered on the 10000 Islands H.Q. Proboards forum and have spent at least the 30 days prior in the 10000 Islands or a Designated Frontier Region before the start of said election. Nations on TITO deployment (or on other assignments by the Chief Executive) still maintain their eligibility to run for office. Any questions on candidate eligibility will be presented to the Chief Executive for a final decision if there is a question as to their status to run for office.
2. If the citizen applying or in the process of nomination holds a position of responsibility in another region or organization, they have to declare all such positions they hold BEFORE declaring their intention to run for Council, or being nominated into Office, to the Chief Executive.
3. In regions that have an established government, Council members are disallowed from holding a position of power that:
a. hampers their productivity as a member of the Council to a degree where they will be unable to perform their function (high profile government positions, deputy positions, and so on in other regions or organizations);
b. Is in direct conflict with their role and position in the Council as defined in the Constitution; and/or
c. Reduces or undermines the dignity of the position they are elected or nominated into.
2. For the purposes of this act, a position of responsibility is a broader term to define the functions of any citizen of 10000 Islands either in this region, in any other region, or in any inter-regional organization. This includes regional officers, government officials, deputies, and so on.
Candidates should also be aware of the rules governing elections as described under NS 33-1.
