Reflecting On An Empty Stomach/b]
Food holds memories better than most things
Sometimes, it takes just a single bite
To bring me back to my childhood days
Spent kneading dough in Grandma’s kitchen
Moments of love are stored in taste and smell
Like turkey at Thanksgiving dinner
Laughter and joy remembered with each bite
As pizza tastes of family time
Some foods turn to ash and dust in my mouth
While others taste like returning home
Cereal reeks of things best forgotten
While oatmeal cookies smell sweet as grief
Isn’t it odd how the human heart works?
We avoid those things that cause us pain
Yet, somehow, it is the things we love most
Which bring us to tears time and again
As ice cream tastes like summers come and gone,
Wedding soup smells of warm embraces
The sight of mac ‘n cheese brings me anger,
While eating cake donuts makes me cry
Our lives are spent gathered ‘round a table
Building friendships and breaking down walls
Moments forever captured by our mouths
As we eat one last meal together
Food holds memories; of this I’m certain
Reminding us of the good and bad
So that we may treasure the time we have
For no one knows what the next day holds
