Welcome to the home of the 10000 Islands Splashball League (TISL)!
Interested? Read on below in the next post and sign up by replying in the thread with your team name. I'll send you your list of players when I get around to finalising how that works.
Tournament 1 will start December 1-2 depending on where you live.

You're a tourist. You decided while planning your trip that you had to go to Taco Island, the heart of 10000 Islands. The area is paradise, and there's always something going on. But wait, you've been here for several days and you haven't even gone to the beach yet!
At the beach, you notice something going on. There appear to be several games of a sport you've never seen before going on. There are participants wearing arm bands of different colours wading around in the shallow water, but it's hard to tell where one game ends and another begins! What are the rules? What's going on?
"Hello there!"
A loud, deep voice rings out over the clamour to get your attention.
"You haven't been round these parts, I assume."
You confirm their assumption with a nod.
"Well, let me explain. On Taco Island's beaches, Splashball is the sport of choice. It's a full contact team sport where your goal is to get the ball into your opponent's hoop and score. You see them, bobbing on the surface?"
You look closer, and sure enough, there are floating hoops everywhere. They don't seem to be floating away so you suspect that they're anchored somehow. You realise that you cannot name a single defining feature of the person talking to you. It might be because they're a stand-in for the author and not a real, defined character.
"Sure, it looks like a mess out there, but everyone knows who they're playing with and against thanks to the colours of their armbands. This chaos is good and all, but we've been trying to get a professional league up and running. Sadly, we don't really have any backers or support so it's been rough getting the word out there."
If only someone could help. Hang on, you're a head of state! You can help! Sure, you'd need to make a few phone calls, but you could probably help this fascinating sport find its feet in 10000 Islands. Do you want to pledge your support?
Okay, enough IC posting. Splashball was vaguely explained in the text above, but I'll be more specific for those with an imagination. The gist of it is that it takes place in somewhat shallow water (think knee height of the average person) with teams of 4, and you score by getting a soft, water resistant ball inside your opponent's floating hoop. If you knock your opponent over into water by shoving them in the back or side, they have to sit out of the contest until the next point is scored. For visualisation's sake, I see the boundaries as roughly two thirds the size of an ice hockey rink. I also came up with a whole list of rules but they aren't really important for this. The first team to score 10 points wins.
The league itself consists of smaller tournaments I'll be simulating when I have the time, usually lasting about a week. At the end of the season (I'm envisioning that it will have 5 tournaments, with 2-3 weeks between each tournament), there'll be a bigger tournament and the champion team will be crowned. Each sign-up will submit a team to the league - nicknames are optional but encouraged. As for how much work you need to do to participate, it's really not a lot.
First, you will get your list of four players, as well as their age and their different attribute ratings. You can pick the names if you want, or you can tell me your nation's naming conventions and I'll randomly generate them. Each player can play one of four positions.
- Defenders are like goalkeepers, and when your team is attacking they'll act as the pivot, hanging back and distributing the ball to teammates. - Forwards shoot for goals with the ball and harass the opponents when on defence. - Midfielders do a combination of defender and forward roles. - The odd duckling here is the Striker, who prioritises pushing over your opponents and maybe helps out with the ball every now and then.
You can have 1 of each position, you can have 2 strikers and 2 defenders, you can have any combination of the four positions. It's all potentially viable, and even I don't really know what the best combination of positions is. That's by design, so I don't have an unfair advantage.
Between each tournament, you can make one change to your roster if you wish to. You may trade with another team, you may cut a player and have that player replaced with a random player from your country, or you may cut a player and have them replaced with one of players in the free agent pool (consisting of players cut from other teams). That's... pretty much it!
If you don't want to commit to that now, it's fine. I'll take sign-ups at any time and introduce your team in the next tournament.
