Let us face the future-vote SDP
My slogan for this election is ‘Let us face the future’. The slogan is taken from the UK Labour Party’s 1945 campaign.
I have chosen it for this election because the world of NationStates has gone through major changes and faces an uncertain future.
The biggest change has been in the Pacifics. Two days after the last election ended, TITO and other defender forces won the battle of The North Pacific, ejecting the pirate Great Bight and his NPO commander Francos Spain. That region has now peacefully transferred to a new delegate.
Then came a shift in the Pacific itself. Tragic RL circumstances led Francos Spain and Poskrebyshev to retire from the game. Now the leader of the renamed People’s Republic of the Pacific is Unlimited, aka EU-topia, former Senator of these fair islands who was a spy. Unlimited was a defender, Unlimited knows how we work.
The NPO infiltrated The North Pacific. What’s to stop them doing it to another of the Seven Feeders.
The other major change has been the creation of the The Crashers Alliance. This group has the potential to cause freedom-loving regions severe problems.
How we respond is ultimately a matter for TITO, but I believe that we can help TITO by building bridges with other regions. If elected to the Senate, I would lobby for an exchange of ambassadors with the major defender groups and regions as well as the neutral groups, such as the Meritocracy and Europe. We would also lobby for a Foreign Affairs Minister on the Council.
We are the Social Democratic Party and as our name says, we are democratic. We would like to increase democracy and accountability.
First we would lobby for all new Ministers to be confirmed by the elected Senators.
Secondly, we would press for Ministers to answer questions in the Senate forum. This would not be optional, it would be compulsory. This would mean that Ministers think about the wishes of Islanders because they will have to account for their actions.
As the EU-topia and Naoi incidents have shown, we must be safeguarded against spies. The SDP will lobby for a codification of the judicial process.
We also wish to see openness. The Council’s reports are all well and good, but we would like to see them expanded. The Council should not be overly secretive. To this end, we would propose that certain threads (such of those of trials) be placed in a sub forum of the University, with parts threatening regional security censored. This would also apply to threads over 6 months old.
Another area we would like to see progress in is electoral reform. We propose changing the voting system to Second Ballot, which would lead to the top two candidates going to a second vote if no candidate got over 50%.
Throughout this I have referred to the Council, not the Council of Nine. This is because we wish the Council to be enlarged to 13 members. There would be two extra Senators, a Minister of Culture and a Minister for Foreign Affairs. These are important areas of Island life and should be recognised as such.
We would also like to see impeachment procedures codified in statute and the same for electoral procedures. Statues will be named.
One of the best parts of these forums is Taco Island. It will stay and we will organise a new competition every month.
The SDP has been lobbying for a press officer and will continue to do so. We will lobby for a Press Office in our forums, so visitors can see our public statements on our site as well as on the outside NS news services.
We will lobby for ‘naturalisation’ programmes- telegramming non-registered nations so they can get more involved in our community.
If elected Senator, I will always be willing to listen to the concerns of ordinary citizens, regardless of political views. My inbox is always open.
All I have left to say is- Vote SDP!
I'm Stefan Hunter, Prime Minister of Serconea and I approve this speech.
